Conservation professionals often act as the interface between basic science and policy or management decisions. Thus students require a fundamental basic scientific literacy. The main topics covered in this course include: 1) writing for scientific, policy and general audiences; 2) reading and interpreting basic statistics; 3) writing sound funding proposals for different types of funders, including government agencies, NGOs and industry; and, 4) designing data collection for different purposes, including hypothesis testing, baseline monitoring, and impact assessments. The course will help students learn basic tenants of scientific literacy.
