This year-long graduate practicum introduces students to the intellectual foundations and evolving practices of the discipline. Through engagement with key questions that have animated historical research and cutting-edge scholarship, participants will explore the methods, theories and practice of history.
Alongside thematic explorations, the practicum includes sessions on professional development both within and beyond the academy. Topics include research design, grant writing, teaching, public engagement, and navigating academic and non-academic career paths.
Each session features presentations by invited speakers, including tri-campus faculty and graduate students, fostering dialogue across areas of specialization and historical approaches.
By the end of the practicum, students will have a deeper understanding of the discipline's intellectual traditions, tools for rigorous and imaginative historical research, and insight into the diverse pathways and practices that define the work of historians today.
It is a required practicum for PhD and PhD U students that must be completed over the first two years of study.
