This course provides an introduction to neuropathology and artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of neurodegenerative disorders. Post-mortem neuropathological examination remains the gold-standard for diagnosis and further provides neuropathological characterization of neurodegenerative disorders. Understanding the pathological changes can be fundamental to developing biomarkers, identifying effective therapeutic targets and developing accurate disease-models. As digital pathology and AI-based evaluation methods continue to advance, it is essential to explore the different applications of AI in neurodegenerative disorders. This includes investigating the selection of AI-based models that have been used in the literature, its prediction or classification accuracy, its advantages and limitations, and possible ethical considerations. This course encourages collaborative learning and by the end of the course, students will have gained comprehensive knowledge on how neuropathology and AI can refine understanding of neurodegenerative disorders. This course will prepare students for research in neurodegenerative disorders and promote interdisciplinary collaborations.
