The Colloquium consists of 10 weekly departmental seminars by invited world-class scientists, and paired with a weekly discussion of a related research article. The seminars are open to the entire department and run on Monday afternoons in the winter term. In advance of each seminar, students will read a research article and a review selected by the invited speaker, and prepare points for discussion and critique. On the preceding Wednesday, students will meet in small groups of 10 to 15 to discuss the research article. Each student will develop and submit a set of questions for the seminar speaker. After attending the seminar, the class will meet with the speaker to ask questions and further discuss the research. This course allows first-year graduate students to develop key skills in critically evaluating scientific research, communicating effectively, and engaging in scholarly discussion, while gaining exposure to a broad range of research areas through interactions with leading experts in diverse fields.
