MUS2118H: Sociology and Cultural Policies of Music Education

Sociology of music education is an established and ever-growing field of research in music education with its corresponding bi-annual conference, ISSME (International Society of Sociology of Music Education). This field of research is key in understanding the roles of music teaching and learning in society through class systems (taste, musical preference, cultural capital...), economic hierarchies, educational and policy decision making, and embedded or taken-for-granted assumptions about and within culture, arts, and creative sectors.

Students in this seminar will acquire skills such as critical thinking and writing, synthesizing theories, better understanding of policies and intricate academic texts, and presentation skills.
