Systems biology is a recent area of science that links general medical research approaches with large-scale analyses. The overall goal of systems biology is to connect complex biological networks with biochemical and physiological outcomes. Systems biology platforms include many of the 'omic' disciplines such as genomics, epigenetics, transcriptomics, network signaling, metabolomics, interactomics, lipidomics, and proteomics. In addition to focusing on omics data, the course will also cover analytical principles such as clustering, network theory, ontologies, and machine learning and AI approaches for integrating and interpreting these datasets. Links between cellular physiology and systems biology have significant implications for our understanding of human biology. This course will introduce students to these developments and enable them to extract and utilize information at the systems level.
