RLG3713H: Jain Textual Traditions in the Indian Context

This graduate-level seminar trains students in the study of Jainism and related South Asian textual traditions, including Buddhist and Hindu movements. Depending on the semester, texts may be studied in the original language (e.g., Sanskrit, Prakrit) or in English translation. Students will learn about various genres of literary production in premodern South Asia (e.g., poetry, narrative, biography, technical treatise, semi-historical chronicle, manual of monastic lineages) and/or be introduced to key aspects of the scholarly study of manuscript traditions (e.g., paleography, critical editing, paratexts, and colophons). Permission of the instructor is required.
