Special Topics in Strategic Management - Strategy Beyond Markets
Achieving superior performance and sustaining it is the central objective of the strategist. In this course, we consider how firms achieve and protect their superior performance by leveraging factors "beyond the market." Factors such as regulation, community disapproval, and contestation from advocacy groups can thwart even the best performing companies, who often find it challenging to deal with forces outside traditional markets. Part of the challenge stems from the need for managers to take a perspective that differs from the logic of interactions in traditional markets. Another is unfamiliarity with and integration of effective strategies for managing risks and leveraging opportunities in the non-market environment. This course will equip students with the latest research-based explanations and tools for achieving and sustaining superior firm performance beyond the market.
