CHL5419H: Introduction to Social Epidemiology

CHL5419H introduces students to social epidemiology, with a central focus on patterns and causes of health inequities, as an organizing focus of social epidemiology. The course focuses on examining (a) theoretical and conceptual issues related to social epidemiology and health inequities, (b) quantitative approaches to conducting research in social epidemiology and, specifically on health inequities, (c) the scientific findings to date about the relationship between social determinants and health outcomes and, (d) the merits of various intervention strategies. The course is delivered through online lectures, which are intended to be interactive and conversational.  In the end, the hope is that the course will enable students to organize and root their future work in the extensive body of scholarly knowledge that has been developed in the field of social epidemiology.
