NUR1302H: Implementation Science: Health Services and Education

Implementation Science (IS) is the study of methods to promote the adoption and integration of evidence-based knowledge and research into practice settings. Implementation Science is guided by conceptual frameworks, theoretical models, strategies, processes, and determinants that influence the full and effective use of innovations in practice. In Canada, dissemination and implementation are commonly referred to as knowledge translation (KT); elsewhere, these IS processes are referred to separately. Dissemination is the active communication and spread of evidence-based interventions to target audiences using planned processes and strategies. Implementation is the process of putting into use (integrating or adopting) evidence-based interventions into a practice setting. Dissemination and implementation are requisite for achieving a sustainable return on research investment and for enhancing outcomes across knowledge users and contexts. NUR1302 will allow students to advance their understanding of multiple aspects of IS, including definitional, conceptual/theoretical, evaluative, and equitable, as an integral component across all aspects of the DN program. The focus will be on enabling leaders to use their knowledge of IS to apply evidence-based research/new knowledge in health care or nursing education settings.
