This gateway seminar will introduce students to the field of Buddhist Studies and its animating major questions and research methods. The aim of the course is to provide a broad overview of the field, including its history, its major subfields, and pressing areas of current research, with attention to Buddhism across various geographies, languages, and historical periods and to the multiple disciplinary frameworks that intersect under the umbrella of Buddhist studies. By the end of the course, students will have a sense of the history and the current state of the field as well as an ability to construct an introductory-level undergraduate syllabus in Buddhist studies.
