RSM1660H: Leadership

The course introduces students to leadership with a focus on leading diverse teams. The course helps students transition from seeing themselves solely as motivated and productive team members to seeing themselves as leaders of thriving teams. Through experiential exercises students confront the challenges that teams face during the various stages of a team’s development and learn strategies to optimize the team’s success. Strategies for establishing trust and psychological safety, sustaining team motivation and well-being, coaching through failure, mitigating biases, ethical decision-making, influence and persuasion, and organizational culture change are discussed and supported by theory and scientific research. Students discover their leadership tendencies through course activities and assessments and learn strategies that help them realize their goals while sustaining good mental health and well-being.

This course complements the 'Self Development and Career Readiness' course, though their foci are different. Leadership is focused on team dynamics and team processes in relation to leading successful and thriving teams. The Self Development and Career Readiness course covers a broader range of topics focused primarily though not exclusively on the student’s own development and dyadic exchanges (e.g., written and verbal communication skills, self-presentation and branding, how to make effective and persuasive presentations, how to have difficult conversations and complicated interactions). The two courses are complementary.
