This course focuses on making additive manufacturing (AM) technology viable for automotive and other high-volume production applications. We learn the latest developments and future trends in materials science, materials processing, and design optimization technologies that are offering mass-produced products with optimal properties, significant advancements in design freedom, integration of multiple components into one complex part, extreme light-weighting, unique and complex mechanical properties, functional prototyping, incorporation of special cooling and insert features in tooling, and an overall revolution in manufacturing. We examine all science and engineering approaches to improve cycle times and overall reduced piece prices. Leading academics and industry experts in the areas of material science, technology, equipment, feedstock, workflow, modelling and optimization, production, and quality are contributing to teaching this course to cover all key areas of polymer/composite and metal parts manufacturing, tooling/fixturing, die/mold inserts, and prototyping.
