SWK4626H: Social Work Practice with LGBTIA Populations

This course provides critical knowledge and skills for working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and asexual (LGBTIA) individuals. This course will identify the health and mental health disparities experienced by sexual and gender minority populations and the role of discrimination on their well-being. Through the lens of practice, students will gain knowledge of identity development and resilience throughout the life course, with a particular focus on youth and emerging adults. Students will learn and utilize affirmative approaches to social work practice (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy, case management, group interventions). Class will consist of lecture and student discussion, role-plays, and simulation-based learning.
