This seminar course will survey the music of 24 living composers. The composers will be chosen to represent diversity in all its forms, including but not limited to ethnic, geographical, gender, and aesthetic diversity. Each week, the music of two composers will be presented in class.
Where it is appropriate, the technical processes of the composer will be briefly examined. The aesthetic choices the composer has made will be discussed with a view to placing the composer's output in the context of historical progress. Where possible, the composers themselves will be invited to take part in the class through online interaction. Students will be expected to research and present specific composers in consultation with the professor.
