NMC2531H: The Mosque: Architecture, Law, and Authority in Muslim Context

This course explores the multiple ways in which the mosque can be studied including its role as a place of prayer and ritual practices, its architecture and urban context, its place in the geographical imagination, and its role as a vehicle to articulate power, enforce authority, and establish community and belonging. The course brings together architectural and textual evidence to examine historical and contemporary mosques in Sunni, Shi'a, and Ibadi traditions. No prior language or architectural history requirement.
