NUR1082H: PhD Seminar 2

The PhD Seminar (Year 2) is a foundational component of the PhD program in the Graduate Department of Nursing Science. This second-year seminar builds on the first-year seminar and provides a forum for students to plan and discuss their progress as they develop their proposal for defense at the end of the second year of the PhD program. Students will use the results of the literature review (completed in Year 1) and their breadth of understanding of research methods (from the Year 1 course — NUR1079H) to work on their thesis proposals with more structured guidance about the necessary components and opportunity for feedback. This seminar is an opportunity for students to refine their study background, rationale, objectives, and methods which will provide a solid foundation for the study proposal. This seminar is an opportunity for students to discuss ideas and is intended to act as a venue for problem-solving and solution-sharing. In this seminar, students will continue to contribute to a community of scholars within the Faculty of Nursing. Students also have the opportunity to observe upper year student's proposal defenses and learn effective strategies for preparation for the proposal defense. In addition, focus will be on students' further development of presentation skills in relation to their research. Supervisor feed-back will be a key component of development of the research proposal, and it will be expected that students will have regular meetings with their supervisors, and integrate the feedback into course assignments. Supervisors will be invited to the final presentations in this course.
