This course examines the global legacies of traditional philosophical, religious, and healing systems and their relevance to contemporary mental health practice. It explores how traditional healing practices can be thoughtfully and ethically integrated into counseling and psychotherapy, with particular attention to the experiences and knowledge of ethnic minority communities.
Students will analyze the cultural assumptions and limitations of Eurocentric therapeutic models through a multicultural psychology lens. The course emphasizes critical engagement with current research on integrative healing approaches, including an evaluation of existing evidence and identification of gaps that warrant further study.
By the end of the course, students will gain practical tools for culturally responsive treatment and develop a deeper appreciation for creative, holistic, and alternative pathways to healing.
