An investigation into the origins of human music, covering the main evolutionary stages of the Paleolithic Age (roughly 3 million years ago to 12,000 years ago). Equal time will be given in the seminar to Homo habilis, Homo erectus, and Homo sapiens, with a brief lead-in session on primates of the pre-human period.
The seminar will cover a range of evidence types, from paleontological and archeological to biological and paleoclimactic. The seminar will also be an opportunity for individual students to do their own interdisciplinary research on the topic of early human music.
