Science communication is the practice of sharing scientific knowledge, outcomes, and processes with non-expert audiences to inform, educate, and engage society, bridge gaps between science and the public, and address societal challenges. Effective science communication is an essential skill for scientists across disciplines. As research becomes increasingly complex and interdisciplinary, the ability to clearly convey scientific ideas to diverse audiences (including peers, policymakers, industry, funding agencies, the media, and the general public) is critical. Likewise, traditional knowledge translation has evolved, with social media networks and compelling visual storytelling becoming a staple in communicating complex research to a public audience. Strong communication enhances research impact, facilitates collaboration, supports informed decision-making, and helps bridge the gap between science and society.
This course equips students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to communicate their research in accessible, engaging, and ethically responsible ways. Through a combination of theory, practical exercises, and feedback from LDFP's Digital Communication and Social Media Specialist, students will receive hands-on training to effectively use photo, video, and design tools to translate their research for various audiences, formats, and digital platforms.
