POL2508H: Studying History and Texts: Qualitative Methods for Research with Human Artifacts

This course for PhD students in Political Science will deepen advanced historical methods in political science research and qualitative strategies for studying textual evidence and other products of human creativity. It will cover the theory and design of historical and archival research in political science, strategies for the qualitative coding of texts, discourses, and human artifacts, debate the ethics and appropriate conduct of such research, and equip students with methods to interpret and draw descriptive and causal inferences from textual and historical evidence. Course assignments will be explicitly hands-on, so that students will refine their own methodological approaches through practice.
