BTC1843H: Relational Database Access for Cybersecurity and Health

This course introduces students to relational database systems and the Structured Query Language (SQL), with a focus on applications in cybersecurity and healthcare. Students will gain hands-on experience extracting, querying, and managing structured data using SQL, and will learn how to interact with relational databases programmatically using Python and R. The course emphasizes real-world use cases, including accessing data from electronic medical record systems such as Epic, as well as querying structured logs in cybersecurity contexts. Students will be introduced to healthcare data standards such as HL7, FHIR, and DICOM, and will learn strategies for secure data access, audit logging, and system integration. By the end of the course, students will be able to design and execute optimized SQL queries across multiple domains and apply foundational database skills in both regulated healthcare environments and sensitive cyber-defense contexts. The course culminates in a multi-system integration project.
