This course is for Clinical Embryology students and it will provide the basic knowledge of genetics required for clinical laboratory embryologists. Lectures are given by the course directors and invited graduate faculty from LMP and OB/GYN. This course builds on LMP2000H. Genetic testing is a large component of LMP2105H, and this course provides the basic understanding. This course presents a broad overview of concepts in medical genetics. Topics covered will include the general organization of the genome, cell division, and the consequences of its perturbation, the role of aneuploidy in human embryonic development, major genetic and hereditary abnormalities both at the chromosome and the monogenic level and their reproductive impact, epigenetic phenomena, and its relevance to assisted reproductive technology. Students will learn the methods available for genetic testing and diagnosis as well as future development and its impact on the management and treatment of genetic conditions.
