This 0.5 FCE practical hands-on training course provides applied experience in surgical pathology at Mount Sinai Hospital. The course combines supervised clinical training with lectures and instruction from the course coordinator, hospital faculty members, and certified pathologist assistants (PAs). Students will spend four days per week at the hospital, initially observing PAs at workstations before progressing to supervised handling and processing of surgical specimens.

The course provides training in specimen orientation, inking, dissection, gross examination, and tissue sampling across a diverse range of specimen types, including soft tissue sarcomas, non-neoplastic bone specimens, inflammatory bowel disease-related and non-neoplastic gastrointestinal specimens, placentas, head and neck specimens, and benign gynecological resections. Additional exposure to malignant gynecological, gastrointestinal, breast, amputation, and complex head and neck specimens may be provided based on student progress and experience. Emphasis is placed on the importance of gross examination and section submission, and how these processes provide critical information for generating comprehensive pathology reports that guide clinical management.
